NORTH EASTERN REGIONAL CENTRE, GUWAHATI

The North Eastern Region comprising the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura is characterized by some special features of physical and socio-economic conditions typical in nature and located in an isolated region. It had been felt over the years that rural development effort in this region suffers from various inadequacies including lack of proper understanding of the problem, trained manpower and training infrastructure for undertaking orientation and refresher courses for the developmental functionaries, like the Officials and the elected representatives. Moreover, due to physical distance and difficulties of transportation and communication, personnel connected with planning and implementation of rural development programmes have not been able to take advantage of availing of the training courses conducted by NIRDPR at Hyderabad.
Further, it has been ascertained that the officers and the elected representatives from this region often attend training programmes in Hyderabad, which are not having adequate references to the specific conditions and situations of this region. It is in this light that the National Institute of Rural Development decided to establish the North Eastern Regional Centre at Guwahati to orient the development functionaries with appropriate training and research activities adapted the needs and problems of the North Eastern Region of the country. Thus the institute came into being in July 1983.
